To reduce the coronavirus spread, most employers have been replacing in-person job interviews with virtual ones. They may use Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, or another platform to talk with candidates instead of having them come to the office. As a job candidate who wants to increase their odds of being offered a role, you need to master the virtual interview.

Implement these tips to master a virtual job interview.

Test Your Technology  

Ensure your technology works well before your interview. Make sure your internet connection is secure and won’t cut off your connection. If your video conferencing software creates a grainy picture or muffled audio, consider purchasing an external webcam or microphone.

Dress Professionally  

Wear professional attire as you would for an in-person interview. Choose a business outfit with solid colors rather than distracting patterns. Avoid flashy accessories, so the interviewer focuses on you rather than your wardrobe.

Organize Your Background  

Create a professional backdrop for your virtual interview. Choose a blank background, so you remain the focal point. Or, set up your equipment in your home office or living room. Ensure the space is clean and organized to show you’re detail-oriented. Sit near a window to keep the light in front of you and avoid looking washed out.

Reduce Distractions  

Try to avoid as many distractions as possible. Turn off your television and computer notifications. Silence your cellphone. Close the windows to avoid traffic sounds. Make sure family members and pets are either out of the house or in a different area than you are. If you’re in a room with a door, close it.

Monitor Your Body Language  

Show confidence through your body language. Sit up straight and smile. Keep the camera at eye level to avoid looking up or down. Since the interviewer is more likely to remember what you said if you maintain eye contact, focus on the camera rather than the hiring manager’s screen image.

Practice Your Answers   

Prepare responses to common interview questions. Focus on where you want to be in your career, what you like about the role you’re interviewing for, and the skills you want to acquire. Summarize how your strengths, skills, experiences, and accomplishments show you will deliver top results in the position. Include questions you want to ask the interviewer about the role, company culture, and other topics you want to learn more about.

Follow Up  

Be sure to send a follow-up email to the interviewer within 24 hours. Thank them for taking the time to speak with you. Mention three main topics you talked about to help them remember your conversation. Restate your interest in the position and why you’re most qualified. Mention that you look forward to hearing back from the interviewer soon.
